Wonder Woman Fighting for Feminism
Rosa Linda Fregoso
discusses what is means to a female in the Chicano culture in her short essay “Hanging
Out with the Homegirls? Allison Anders’ Mi
Vida Loca”. Fregoso talks about how the women after seeing this movie denied
a lot of the stories that were portrayed in the film. One of the main things
that was brought up was how no two girls would ever be pregnant by the same
guy. Women after viewing this movie had a hard seeing this a true Chicano film
because no one would ever do that. Another point that I personally found
interesting about the Chicana culture is the all generations of women are there
to support each other. Fregoso complaint about the film is how unrealistic it
is that the younger generation splits off from the older generation after
getting pregnant or joining a gang, when in fact it is the exact opposite.
The movie clip I
chose is one of the first scenes from Wonder Woman were Diana is fighting
alongside only men and is learning just what is up against. I chose this movie
cli because it shows just how powerful a woman can be. Even though she has
superpowers I think this scene is very important because it shows that even for
the time that this is set in she was not willing to reseed back like Steve was originally
hoping when he first brought her back to England. I also chose this because
Diana came from a strong and tight knit group of women that always stayed
together. Diana had to choose between her family and saving mankind, which it wouldn’t
be much of superhero story without some sort of family drama to get the hero to
the main action. I think it really reflects back on how close the Chicano
culture was and how their women of all ages stayed together.
