Breaking Away
Pin up girls have been a long talked about and discussed
in our society. Many people have argued that pin ups are just objectifying and
sexualizing women. Buszek argues this throughout her narrative in her book. She
argues that pin ups allowed women to embrace their femininity and to break away
from the social norms of that time. “the pin-up continues to impress
young feminists with her aggressive sexuality, imperious attitude, and
frightening physique...” (Buszek p.2). Buszek is able to bring to light how
women in theater embraced doing pin-ups, but how seeing them surprised them at
how over sexualized they are.
The image that I chose I think is a
lot like the pin-ups seen in Buszek’s writing. The woman is dressed to look
like she is in a military uniform and is saluting while sitting on what look to
be a bomb or missile. I chose this image because it was most likely used to be propaganda
to the men serving in the war. Everything that she is wearing is also red, white, and blue to add to the patriotism. The woman is also wear a red top which is one
color that is often sexualized. One thing that stands out is that the uniform
is form fitting and that she is wearing heels to add to the picture. While her
clothing is sexualized he pose is on a more neutral than other pin-ups who tend
to be posed more sexually or in power poses.
